Wallpaper images will load in a full screen window when you click on the associated screen resolution links. By "right clicking" ( use your right mouse button) on the full screen image and selecting "set as wallpaper" from the menu, the image will become your desktop background image.

Desktop icons are easier to read and look better if their background color matches colors and the background image. To change the text and background color of your desktop icons "right click" on some empty space on the desktop and select "Properties" from the menu. Select the "appearance" tab along the top of the "display properties" window. Where it says "item:" select "desktop"-- select a color and then click the "apply" button.
