The Deer “problem”

If McGreevey could find a way to tax deer, they would all be gone from New Jersey in no time at all.

Give us all a break - I can't stand McGreevy either because he is a little pig who practices cronyism - but you can't continue to let Republicans run up the bills by laying off on taxing business, thereby incurring huge deficits while temporarily creating flush times for all because no one is really paying the bills, then blame your opponent when he raises taxes to pay for what you did. Reagan did it and because he was the first two term president followed by a preisdent of his own party in quite a while it was Bush 1 who got saddled with the effect rather than a Democrat. McGreevy inherited Christie's bills. There is no such thing as a tax cut unless spending is cut. Otherwise all they are doing is shifting the burden somewhere else- Bush's tax "cuts" have just shifted the burden more to the states to meet the money the Feds no longer provide so they resort to raising taxes that effect everyone so as to dilute the effect of the hit on any one group - but the overall effect has been that the wealthy get the cut and the rest of the population foots the bill for them through increased sales taxes, real estate taxes, etc. If we all ran our households like this we would all be going bankrupt every few years.

Back to deer - we should cull the herd unless you want lots of bears or wolves to do it for us - or worse let them starve during bad winters despite the ever increasing supply of tasty shrubs supplied by our developer friends during their continued destruction of the natural environment.

Enough from the idiotic bleeding hearts who can't separate fact from emotion. NJ is wildly out of sync with any natural balance and you cannot ignore the fact that the deer population has exploded out of control, bringing with it health problems in the form of Lyme disease. I used to scoff at the problem but now I can't even go out in the woods in Jockey Hollow or the Great Swamp without fear of becoming debilitatingly ill.

I think if we asked the deer nicely to not eat our plants or run in front of our cars, they may cooperate. After all, they are brought up in poor homes, having to fend for themselves and live off the land. I don't know any deer that have cable TV.

Kill em all is right !!!!!!! I think back a few years ageo when Jack Shrier and his drunken wife were out protesting the deer hunt in Lewis Morris.
A short time later a mother and some kids were killed in a horrible accident in Chester. What did they say then ??? SILENCE the friggin deer lovers were SILENT !!!!!! What they are in essence saying is that a deers life is more valuable. I say NO....we have pushed the deers natural habitat into oblivion, this is true. But we being the supposed intelligent group do nothing. We need to open the deer hunt up and really thin them out.I am told 50-60 years ago you were lucky to see a deer around here. Why? its obvious, over development and less hunting....

50-60 years ago we didn't have any damn Yuppies either. Let's open a season on them, or at least find a good sterilization method.

Rumor has it the deer are Unionizing. Going to have to let the older ones eat the shrubs for 1/2 hour before the younger ones get any, otherwise the older ones won't crap in your yard or run in front of your car except during official hours.

Bambi

The real case is that where you work ( the sewage treatment facility) is going to hire new Sludge Farmers (no exp. required)
for $12.00 more a week than you get $8.00 - so to recap
- New Sludge Farmers $20hr. - you - after 9 years of Hard Sewage Farming - still get $8.00 hr

But thats ok - it makes Sense to you.

MENDHAM - Residents are afraid they’re going to get hit with arrows shot by deer hunters along the heavily traveled Patriot’s Path.

"Mayor Richard Kraft said Monday hunting should be prohibited along the path.

We should be closing it to hunting,... Kraft said. It's under review and investigation."

comment:Admin: That is not what he was saying dec 6th

MENDHAM - India Park Brook is now off limits to bow hunting from sunrise to 9 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to sunset, Monday through Friday, as a result of a Monday, Dec. 20 vote by the Borough Council.

Admin note: As is routine The Observer Tribune has misstated the facts... the park won't be closed to bow hunting, It will be close to the public during the listed hours.
...
Councilmen also decided to have signs posted to warn residents about hunting. The areas closed included areas north of Wyndam Lake, Mountain Valley Park and Cold Hill road.

...Borough Council members said the signs and closing the park were suggested to ensure safety and that no one would be arrested for being in the park.

comment: uninforced signs??? In my amateur legal opinion if the town does not enforce the park closing, we gain little protection against liability issues.

Not A Creature Was Stirring [... especially not little Rudolph with the arrow in his head]:

Summation of the December 20th meeting of the Borough Council

....The meeting was basically a slam dunk victory for the Mendham chapter of Deer Murder Incorporated... [my 2¢ ... as previously stated I believe bowhunting is disgustingly inhumane and we shame our intelligence to permit it. The underlying facts that prove this deer management program to be a failure are these. Nearly one-third of the total deer population in New Jersey is killed every year... consequently most deers will not reach maturity let alone old age. As in human populations, mature animals are less prolific and in turn mitigate against overpopulation. It may sound strange, but it is an absolute fact, that almost every deer in New Jersey will be killed by a hunter-- eventually... it's only a matter of time. In practical absolute fact deers "managed" in this way are not living anything like a natural life-- they are in fact being farmed for the entertainment that can be derived from the fun of killing them. We don't allow people to "hunt" cows in the pasture-- and we in fact enforce laws mandating a humane slaughter ... why is a future hamburger entitled to better treatment?... The fact is, current Deer management policies impose a perpetual and unrelenting genocide on the deer population. I say if we are going to eventually kill every deer in the state-- let's just get it all over with and exterminate the population all at once -- and end the perpetual cruelty we are imposing... or you can pet the family dog and just pretend you're not a crule disgusting duplicitous hypocrite

Morris County hopes to spearhead a statewide effort to get federal help to combat white-tailed deer overpopulation, officials said yesterday.

Freeholder Jack Schrier proposed a resolution to urge federal officials to set aside at least $5 million annually to be dedicated to intensive research and swift development of a practical, safe, long-lasting deer contraception formula and a one-shot method to deliver it. ...

His colleagues on the seven- member freeholder board were supportive of the measure yesterday, though they successfully urged Schrier to delay a vote for a couple of weeks to allow area sportsmen to be queried on the issue.
...
"This could bring relief to people living in high-density areas where hunting is not appropriate," Schrier said.
