Mendham: Town Stuff: C'mon let's write some better laws!: InMendham.com Proposition #4 -- Deer

The mayor and town council have the free ability to put referendums or initiatives on election ballots. Unfortunately, they rarely exercise this authority...Why? ... Plane corrupt Fear of public interest and scrutiny?

Unlike like petitions, and media gauges of public opinion, ballot questions (fairly phrased) are the only practically reliable way to measure popular (voter) opinion.... and someone (I guess that would have to be me) should challenge the council to permit public participation, through referendum, in the making of significant public policy decisions. So...

InMendham.com Proposition #4 (Draft of a suggested ballot initiative to be submitted to the town council for consideration after at least three participants on this message board provide their endorsement of the text)

Deer overpopulation represents a substantial health threat and imposes substantial economic costs. Local governments have loosely united, with state cooperation, to deal with the problem through facilitating and subsidizing recreational hunting (specifically bowhunting). There's no evidence that this approach has led to any significant reduction in overall deer population, and some argue it is therefore a pointless cruelty. Would it be your command, that your local government officials thoroughly analyze, publicly debate, and fairly consider working with other regional municipalities, and the state government, to find, and implement, a more immediate, effective, humane, and sustainable/permanent solution to the problem.[YES] [NO]

Constructive suggestions regarding improving the text would be appreciated.

No thanks. I suggest allowing hunting with rifles as well as bows. Trapping in leg traps would help as well. Also, I suggest using poison to rid ourselves of these pests.

No thanks.

So "immediate, effective, and sustainable/permanent solution"..OK, but "humane" not okay? are you even trying to be a grown-up?

I suggest allowing hunting with rifles as well as bows.

Rifles in residential walking parks? I think that one might even scare the New hillbilly mayor.

Trapping in leg traps would help as well.

Implementing that one might get us on the cover of Time magazine as the most insane community of the year.

Also, I suggest using poison to rid ourselves of these pests.

I hate to disappoint you, but consistent with the Proposition, the right poison might be an "immediate, effective, humane, and sustainable/permanent solution" worthy of consideration.

your hunting deer has made them evolve into a glowing eyed yellow children of the damned species tracking your habits in your own natural habitat. you have created a new breed of deer with powers incomprehensible to ordinary mortals as yourselves. Pershaps you should make peace with these creatures before they prepare a book on "how to serve man".
