Mendham: Town Stuff: C'mon let's write some better laws!: InMendham.com Proposition #1 - one town

The mayor and town council have the free ability to put referendums or initiatives on election ballots. Unfortunately, they rarely exercise this authority...Why? ... Plane corrupt Fear of public interest and scrutiny?

Unlike like petitions, and media gauges of public opinion, ballot questions (fairly phrased) are the only practically reliable way to measure popular (voter) opinion.... and someone (I guess that would have to be me) should challenge the council to permit public participation, through referendum, in the making of significant public policy decisions. So...

InMendham.com Proposition #1 (Draft of a suggested ballot initiative to be submitted to the town council for consideration after at least three participants on this message board provide their endorsement of the text)

The Borough and Township of Mendham were split into two separate towns over 100 years ago--over a now long irrelevant dispute. There is logical, and statistical, reason to believe that greater efficiencies in the provision of services can be achieved through reconstitution, or consolidation, of the town governments. Would it be your command, that your local government officials thoroughly analyze, publicly debate, and fairly consider such a consolidation. [YES] [NO]

Constructive suggestions regarding improving the text would be appreciated.

This is a "duh!" Why would the township want to consolidate with the borough and accept the 20 million dollars in debt that you refer to? Hell, no!!

Not so "duh". The Township's debt is at $18 million and we're about to buy at least one new fire engine. The difference isn't that great, but the potential savings is.

The township could use a lot more than 1 fire truck. Some of those rust buckets are 30 years old. Just because the department is volunteer doesn't mean you give them no respect and expect them to work with junk. Wait until a paid dept gets started, you think the cops cost a lot?

I don't think I was addressing our need for new fire-fighting equipment, nor the relative costs of a professional fire department. I was responding to the first message posted above. I intended to dispel the feeling that the borough's debt is a significant deterrent to the merger of our respective services...or of the towns, themselves. The fact is, the township's debt is already almost as high as that of the borough, and with the purchase of some expensive capital equipment (e.g. a new fire engine this year, and possibly one or two next year), the township's debt will be as high...possibly even higher.
