Mendham: Town Stuff: The Next Council Meeting: 5/01/2006

I submitted these questions to the town council:

1. I have twice attempted to solicit from the council some indication of your understanding of "public access television". On both occasions the council was unwilling or unable to provide useful answers to my questions, and instead provided what I would claim was a contrived pretense of confusion. Making the question as explicit as possible: You are about to enter into an agreement that gives you production control over a public access channel. I would inquire if any of you have read the federal law relevant to the regulation of "cable access channels" and do you intend to respect that law and the First Amendment Rights that law intends to protect?

5/1/06 response:The answer would be we have an attorney that guides us in our decisions, who researches these laws, and we will not break laws knowingly.

2. There have been newspaper reports indicating that a sergeant with the Borough Police force has "perpetrated" some conduct, that at minimum, could be described as evidence of bad character. Has the council, or does the council, intend to take any public action, or make any public statement, in response to the (reported) bad public behavior of the police officer?

5/1/06 response:This is a personnel issue, personnel issues are not brought before the public, and will not be discussed in public until action is taken.

3. The mayor has previously stated at a council meeting that he was again running for mayor. Local newspapers have reported that the mayor is not seeking reelection. Is there any reasonable explanation for this confusing circumstance?

5/1/06 response:actually no.......... end of public session.

Maybe re-phrasing question 2 may elicit a response. I would think what the real point here is that in the municipal court, you can routinely hear "ignorance of the law is no excuse" just before people are found "guilty". I would expect that the police department should require that any officer going out of state should familiarize themselves with the local "carry laws". Some sort of disciplinary action should be taken, even if it is just a letter of reprimand in the file. The real question of"character" comes into play when considering the statement that was given regarding the purpose of his trip.

I think there are few other issues of character relevant to the circumstances... if he put on his gun with the deliberate intent to intimidate patrons... that ain't good. Also, the rather reckless restroom stuff ain't exactly what highly paid role models should be capable of.

This is how the official "draft" minutes summarize the questions and answers:

quote:

Gary Mosher, 147 Ironia Road, requested the Council’s understanding of “public access television” and the law; conduct of a Borough police officer and the Mayor’s reelection. Mayor Kraft responded that the Council has no intentions of breaking the law and will follow attorney guidelines. Conduct of an employee is personnel and will not be discussed. He further responded that he is not running for reelection.

Funny how I didn't hear the part where the mayor states he is not running for reelection. The good news... The Dick isn't apparently running. The bad news Councilman Neil Henry, who apparently will be the only choice on the ballot, will likely be just a bigger cheat and liar.

Anyone have a real story regarding the Mayor's decision not to run? Did he just forget to file or something?
